The 900 Single Rollergun - Unrolling The Roller Speargun

In this spearfishing workshop episode, I cover my favourite single rollergun setups, starting with the 900cm speargun. This is the setup that I have found to have a good balance between power, accuracy and the overall feel of the gun.

Possibly one of the greatest factors that determine the setup I use is buoyancy. A 900 roller first off needs to have enough buoyancy to float the roller gun with the shaft out. Must remember that all the components on a gun remain the same, but the shorter the gun, the less volume /buoyancy you have to play with.

A carbon barrel in this case is essential, and also adds to counter the weight of the shaft. Even then the carbon barrel will only be buoyant enough for a 1.3m 6.6mm shaft. But if you don't mind a slightly heavier muzzle then a 7mm works really well too.

Being a short gun makes the 900 easy to load. So I prefer to hand load 14mm bands which have more than enough power to drive the 6.6mm & 7mm shafts.
Lengths will depend on your rubber. 45cm (400% when loaded)  is as short as I would go if you can load it. 50cm is a good length to start with.

Speargun Setup:
Gun: 900 Carbon Rob Allen Speargun or similar buoyancy
Rubbers: 14mm @ 45cm -50 cm
Pretension: Maximum
Spear: 1.3m 6.6mm shaft – double wrap 1.8mm Dyneema

How to Splice Single Braid Dyneema with a Brummel Lock on a Spear.

Video on How to Splice Dyneema on a Spear
How to Splice Single braid dyneema onto your spear with a  brummel lock-splice..... and using no knots.
Hollow core or single braid dyneema is stronger than standard spearfishing dyneema. The big thing however is not the extra strength of the line it's the fact you can splice the line. Splicing the line means that you do not lose strength like you do with a knot. Making the shooting line even stronger. Making for an extremely strong and durable spearfishing shooting line.

North Coast Spearo Camp

Hey guys,

There is a "Spearo Camp" going down up our way on the North Coast this weekend. It has been put together by Grant Somers and the guys at Freedivers. The weekend is aimed at the entry level spearfisherman, and from what I hear it is something you dont want to miss.

There will be some basics from equipment tech talk to practicals in the pool and sea. Its not often guys will take the time out to lead the new guys through the basics. I know that even if you have been diving for some time there will be something to learn. These guys have decades of experience and are willing to share it.

The program looks like this:
  1. Friday Night - Freediving theory and spear gun mechanics, spearing Movie! braai for supper.
  2. Saturday-morning (intermediates) free dive with two instructors, (beginners) pool training
  3. Saturday-afternoon (intermediates) freedive deeper water. (beginners) sight targeting.
  4. Saturday night- boat, shore and safety. SAs Best spearos in action!! GREAT SPEARING VIDEO and braai.
  5. Sunday- Beginners get to go to sea!
There is a small cost to help cover costs ..R80 cheap!! There is also accommodation available if you need to stay over.

Call Grant on - 0832274917  or check in at Freedivers for more info.

This is one not to be missed.
