Barren Island Dogs Spearfishing Madagascar

Click to Watch - Barren Island Dogs Spearfishing

This 👹 Devilfish 🐟 Rodeo to Madagascar was soooo much fun. This is my annual west coast run from the Barren islands 🏝to Castor Banks. This was a serious case of the young bull 🐮… Humoud Al Hajlan vs the old bulls ….Abdulla Al Malki  & Yousef Almalki. Lots of bets, banter and tom foolery went down, the only time we were not laughing was when we were holding out breaths.
As always there was a bit of friendly competition… just a bit. This trip there were loads of 30-40kg fish with the odd tank causing through the action. Picking your fish and making the shot count 🎯is easier said than done, even when the damn things are on the surface. Then one morning the the old bull Abdulla strolls out gets in the water with the 1300 double roller amidst the chaos of a Couta and Doggie wrangle and picks off the fish of the trip, a 45kg Doggie. This fish came in on his brother Yousef’s Doggie, which had come in on Humoud’s Spanish Mackerel. Three fish on, sharks and chaos, absolute spearfishing ecstasy.
Young bull Humoud came back with fire putting in a couple great stone 🎯shots. But unfortunately a good size Black Marlin and tank doggie that did not get landed will be on replay every night for the rest of the year.

This spearfishing spoof on Alt-j’s ‘In Cold blood’ video was an in the moment thing that just stuck.

Spearfishing Dog Tooth in Madagascar

CLICK TO VIEW - Spearfishing Dogtooth Tuna in Madagascar with MJK

Finally here is the spearfishing video from MJK's Madagascan exploratory trip he did with me at the end of last year. We found some crazy new spots far off the beaten track that had some amazing shoals of dog tooth tuna.
This trip was a little different as we spent alot of time looking for bigger fish. MJK only pulled the trigger 5 times on this trip and converted 4 fish losing only one to sharks. Pretty much setting the std now for landing doggies over 100lbs.

Best of MJK's Spearfishing

Watch Video Here - Best of MJK Spearfishing

I have been very fortunate & privileged to follow Mohammed Jassim Al-Kuwari .. a.k.a  MJK around the world on some the craziest spearfishing adventures. Each year he has put time and funds aside to do something 'special' and this video is the culmination of the last 6 years of 'special moments.

One of the things you will notice in the videos is the amazing 'stone' or kill shots. Some guys think he is a bit of a freak.. and he kind of is. But what people don't realise is the time and effort he puts into getting these shots right.
From perfecting gear and testing them in pools and in the ocean, I have not met any spearfisherman with the same dedication and passion for getting it right.

So I guess this in away is an ode to MJK's passion and commitment to his love for spearfishing, I hope you enjoy it.

Have a watch and please leave a comment and let me know what you thoughts are.

Cheers and enjoy

Spearfishing Castor Banks Madagascar

Spearfishing Dogtooth Tuna on Castor Banks Madagascar
If you are like most spearfisherman, ticking the Dogtooth Tuna box is high on the bucket list. Doggies however are pretty hard to find. Harder to shoot, and harder still to land. Making them the trophy fish over all trophy fish in the spearfishing world. That’s where my spots off  Castor Banks in northern Madagascar come into play. Castor Banks is a vast area, and I still have many secret places that don’t get any fishing pressure. This means that it is almost guaranteed that you will see lots of Doggies there.

We also have unique ways of approaching the fish in the area and some spots we even get the doggies to the surface. Watch the video

I will then personally guide you through every step of the way to shoot and land the fish of your dreams.

Spearfishing Madagascar

Hey

I have just gotten back from a crazy spearfishing adventure in northern Madagascar. We went to Intermediate and the famous Castor Banks, where we found some all time dog tooth tuna action.

As per usual the dogtooth proved harder to land than to shoot. We slowed things down and the guys got more careful of their shots and Ahmidy was rewarded with a fantastic stone shot on a 37kg Dog tooth.

The dog tooth were coming to the surface in some places, it was that wild. You could see absolute giant fish cruizing below 20m. Check this video out - Spearfishing Dogtooth Tuna Madagascar

Free Swimming Dogtooth Tuna Madagascar Video

Madagascar is well known for its incredible numbers of doggies, and not so much for their size. I have seen number of fish between 60-80kg on this last trip. And my skipper who has been spearing and fishing the area for 15 years is adamant that we will spear one of a 100kg very soon. As fisherman have gotten them at that size.

Anyway time will tell and I have a number of trips there in the next few months, lets hope my skipper is right!

MJK Spearfishing Lazarus Banks

MJK 65kg Dog Tooth Tuna - Lazarus banks
I have been away for weeks now guiding different spearfishing trips and adventures. One of the standouts was the week spent with Mohammed Al Kuwari out on the famous Lazarus banks in northern Mozambique. it was the first time I had guided out there so I teamed up with Eric Allard, who has been running charters there for the last year already and has access to good boats. Because Lazarus is so far from shore we needed a live-aboard which meant that we literally just did the 'eat-sleep-dive' thing for over a week.

We were also filming MJK's segment for a new film 'In The Zone' is working on. Richard 'Snoek' Leonard came out to direct the shoot and be extra hands and eyes in the water. Lazarus was perfect for filming with its crystal clean water and shoals of Doggies and Sharks.

Lazarus is an amazing spot, and has some incredible Dog Tooth Tuna. The shallow structure and numerous coral bommies meant that landing the fish was easier said that done. The Doggies were also very cunning and after the first few drifts would sit just a little bit deeper, close enough to pick out the big ones, but just too far for a perfect shot. You learn very fast that unless its the shot is the most perfect you have ever had and that you are 100% sure of hurting or stoning the fish its just not worth taking. Broken steel cable is testament to this, the big Dogs are just insanely powerful.

Mohammed who is known for his epic kill shots was on a good run at first with 3 kill shots (or as we joke with him "MJK shots") in a row. With a prize 65kg Doggie rolling over with a perfect MJK shot, possibly one of the best shots I have ever seen. The good run came to an abrupt end when he shot an even bigger fish. The fish rolled over and we were almost about to celebrate when the fish woke up, it did a slow dazzed circle around us at 30m and then disappeared with 2 x 35l and 2 x 11l floats. We eventually got the floats back, and the steel shooting line had sheared off!! So you can only imagine what happens if your shot is bad.
MJK with a 45kg Lazarus GT
Giant Kingfish are also numerous on the Lazarus and we saw shootable fish every day. MJK took one and it weighed in at 45kg, but I think if we were not focusing on Doggies we would have found a bigger one. Then again we were focusing on great fish on film so we also only took the shots where everything was perfect.
Rich, MJK, And myself
Lazarus is fairly big and a week is not enough time to explore all the spots. We would have loved to have stayed on for more days but we were limited to how long we could stay out there by how long the ice that was keeping the fish would last. So we left feeling like we need more days :-) I guess that's not a bad thing. It just means we will have to go back.
Lazarus is a serious logistical mare, yachts, boats flights and of course this all means that its not cheap. But if you have the means, then this is definitely a place you need to add to your bucket list.

Madagascar Spearfishing Expedition

Massive Madagascan Spanish Mackerel - Mohammed Al Kuwari
I recently got back from an epic exploration spearfishing trip to the Barren Islands off the west coast of Madagascar. We spent a week exploring 200km of an uncharted reef system looking for giant Dog Tooth Tuna and Black Marlin.

We didn't really have any joy with the Doggies, although we did see a couple of very very big fish. On the Marlin side we did see a couple and got close to getting a spear into a really big one.

We covered a massive amount of area and shot a loads of good fish from giant Spanish mackerel and some GT's. The full report back on this amazing trip will be published in Vol 12 of the Ultimate Spearfishing Magazine

Extreme Blue Water Spearfishing

If you cant see the video Watch it Here

My good mate Barret Harvey has just finished editing down an epic promo video for Eric Allard at Extreme Blue Water Spearfishing in Tanzania. The footage in this promo vid came from a trip some Durban guys did last year and they got some great fish. What is impressive is that most of these fish were shot in well over 30m. Flip and how are those Doggies?

Spearfishing with Cameron Kirkconnell

Cameron Kirkconnell is one of the guys you hear of a fair bit in spearfishing circles. His blog SpearBlog.Com is an institution and one I follow on a weekly basis. Aside from that a couple world records and a host of other notches in his belt I am mostly jealous of  the great spearfishing trips he does all around the world. ...it sounds like he dives even more than I do!

We actually featured a section of him in our very successful film OneFish in this section he shoots a world record Black Fin Tuna and a host of other great fish ... See below or Spearfishing with Cameron Kirkconnell

His most famous record is his Dogtooth Tuna World Record he got in Indo of 91kg although he did get one even bigger last year in Tanzania but because of a mess up with paper work and licensing in the area the record  has not been acknowledged yet.

World Record Dog Tooth Tuna

Pending World Record Dog Tooth Tuna 110kg - Tanzania - Cameron Kirkconnell
The World Record Dog Tooth Tuna Record was smashed twice in one day in Tanzania recently. Brad Thornbrough broke the record first while Cameron Kirkconnell was filming. Shortly later Cameron shot one slightly bigger. This is what Cameron had to say:
The fish was so big that despite having the chance for a head shot on him I changed my aim and shot him in the same place as the last really big one I’d landed knowing that the shot would hold and take out his propulsion. The fish was much much much bigger than I thought though. When I was on my way back to the surface I looked at Brad Thornbrough and spread my arms as wide as I could underwater to show him it was massive then hit the surface and he asked, ‘How big was it? World Record?’
At the time I said not that big but definitely over 150 lbs. When it came to the surface though we started flipping out and knew it was over the 200 lb mark.
On the beach the scale dropped to a staggering 243lbs shattering the old record (201lbs)
check out Cameron's blog for more.... Spearblog.Com

Who would have thought that a Dog Tooth Tuna over 100kg would ever be landed.... Bloody Amazing!

Spearfishing Dog Tooth at Kilwa Tanzania

Eric Allard - 60kg Dog Tooth Tuna shot off Kilwa Tanzania
The stories of spearfishing Dog Tooth in Tanzania are numerous, and enticing. Reality kicks home when you constantly get pics from guys like Eric with epic Dog Tooth Tuna that you can only dream of.
Here is Eric with a 60kg Doggie that he speared off Kilwa south of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. This was his second day in an 18 day trip.

16 days spearfishing to go I wonder what he will send me next?

Spearfishing Dogtooth Tuna in Madagascar

One of the Dogtooth Tuna from our spearfishing trip to Madagascar
The footage from our spearfishing trip to Madagascar was so epic we did a quick edit and have added it to our next DVD OneFish out in the beginning of November. The spearfishing was so amazing that we are trying to organise to get back to Madagascar early next year. This time a little wiser and hopefully this time we will land some really big Dogtooth Tuna.

I am loading some more pics up on the One Fish facebook page so go check it out.

Spearfishing Madagascar & the Casor Banks

I have just gotten back from an exploratory spearfishing trip to Madagascar. The Ultimate Spearfishing mag and a journalist from the French magazine Apnea were invited out to Nosy Sakatia by the spearfishing charter Orca Sakatia run by Craig Scott.
A Castor Banks Dog Tooth Tuna
I dont want to give too much away as we will be doing a full article in the next edition of the mag. But I have to tell you that it is off the hook! We only managed to get out to Castor Banks once as it is 80km out to sea!! But when you get there you will flip your lid. Castor Banks has to be the best place I have ever spearfished ...hands down. On 2 occasions I saw Black Marlin, one was a beast the other was probably about 150kg. We saw Sailfish on numerous occasions and there were Wahoo and Iggies every where. And thats only what you see from the surface!! When you get to 20-25m as you approach the drop off there are Dog Tooth Tuna  that swim at you like Salad fish only a 100 times bigger.
Dane Salmon happy finally have one Doggie in the hand.
The problem with a place like that is that you let fish of a lifetime just swim past, because once you have seen Marlin, Sailfish and 60plus kg Doggies thats all that you will settle for. I pulled back on shots on 30kg plus Ignobilis Kingfish and countless Wahoo. The prize was the Dogtooth, and putting spears into the Doggies was easy, the hard part was landing the fish. I lost and broke 5 spears and rigs, and I was only shooting the Dogtooth tuna I could get the best shots on. Even when you shoot a 40-50kg Dogtooth in the head you get snapped up. Dane shot what I think was a 60kg fish, I was on the bottom and saw the whole thing. It looked like he spined the fish and it went down doing somersaults, that fish some how still had plenty of life and it bolted off only to snap the metal clip on his line.
Ronan with his Sailfish
While Dane and I tried in vain to land a big Doggie, Ronan Bourhis the French journalist managed to get close to a Sailfish and landed a good one. We did manage to get a few small fish, but the Doggies beat us :-(
I think next time I will be whole lot wiser and more prepared...... Like take a whole bunch of spears prepared!

Spearfishing Dog Tooth Tuna

Eric Allard 65kg Dog Tooth Tuna shot off Tanga in Tanzania

With enough time and money, I would be an 'excellent' spearfisherman!! Fact is I am just not going to spearfish a Dog Tooth Tuna here at home. Damn, I am Jealous!!

How is this epic tuna Eric shot? Apparently it pulled his buoys to some ridiculous depth crushing a foam fulled float. A mate of mine Andrew is going to visit him in a months time up in Tanzania..... it is a real pity he does not need me to carry his suit cases!!

Back here at home the south should come through later and sort things out for tomorrow.

Lets hope
