Spearfishing Weekend Wrap Up

Ryan Berry doing it right.
Conditions along the Natal coast this weekend were a bit iffy for spearfishing, although there was a dive to be had at most spots. North and south of Durban had some diveable water but it was not the warmest water and the od Garrick and Snoek came out here and there. Most guys were not complaining as they were happy to ad least get in the water.

Further up north the story seemed a little different. Ryan Berry an old time local at Sodwana went to test drive his sinuses after a recent sinus op.  It seems all went well with good fish speared and sinuses ok.

Other news is that Brod put up his short documentary on the  Euro Africa Spearfishing Championships this is definitely worth a watch ... give some good insight into how tough it really was.

The Ultimate Spearfishing Magazine and Spierre fins have also started a competition on the USM Spearfishing Forum where you can win a pair of Pure Carbon Spearfishing Blades from Spierre.
All you need to do to win is start a "Hot" topic on the forum and the one that gets the most action wins.

Go here to find out more: Spierre - USM Competition

So even if the water stays cold at least the forum will be heating up this month.

Cheers

Spearfishing Update

Benjamin Bucher - 37kg Wahoo shot at 7mile - Sordwana Bay
Its been a bit crazy getting back to work after the long weekend at Sordwana for the Blue water Classic Compie.

Andy Henwood took the first prize on points, totally out preforming all the other guys on both days.
The diving was hard and many guys did not shoot a fish the whole weekend. Ben Bucher came second in the biggest fish category with his 37kg Wahoo. But I think he won the comp on envy!

Darrell sent through this report of the south coast:
Dont know if there`s been much diving the past few days??, certainly not inshore my side with this big cold front which just passed.
The august winds are on time too, so its a case of the `early bird` when the swell drops off.
I`m sure theres still some garrick about and the `sards` have probably disappeared though we hardly had action on the middle- south coast.
Last I got in was last Tuesday with `green but clean` water and saw a couple of snoek off the cuda court area in hibberdene, whilst my gun was snagged in a cave.
There are a few brusher making an appearance as the fishermen caught a few over the weekend along the Hibberdene-Umzumbe stretch though they were under 5 kgs.

Shane from Freedivers gave me a call to say his Bluewater Classic Comp was a successful comp. at Sodwana with a few sailfish coming out and one really big 30+ Kg wahoo amongst other fish as well.
Gary Gillon meanwhile was up at vidal and reported things quiet but they did manage one decent cuda and a 24 kg wahoo.

cheers-

Darrell
The diving here on the North Coast has been dismal and there has not been any diving for the last week or two. The Sardines in the Durban area, and the even the odd day were sardines have been netted. So hopefully if the conditions let the boys get in there will be some good reports soon.

Weekends Spearfishing Roundup.

Ben Bucher 4 Cuta totaling over 50kg at Sordwana

With the Couta a little quiet at home we headed off to Sordwana to change our luck. The weather and sea conditions were very good but alas it was just as quiet. Well that was for everyone except Ben, who seemed to be on the money every time he dived down. The rest of us had to be content with the left overs.

News from back home was that the snoek were still lurking around and as per usual some one found a couple stray Couta.
I heard that the Shoal was productive again and some good fish came out. (I will post when I get more info)

Other than that the swell was strong this weekend and I think most guys opted to pull out the surfboards. This next week looks like we will get some diving towards the end of the week. Hopefully by then the Couta pitch up.

Cheers

Spearfishing News

Howdy,

I am slowly getting back into the swing of things, Wayno is still up north at Sordwana and they got some fish yesterday. They did not get any 'special' fish but landed 3 cuta 2 kingfish and a nice sized Kakaap.

Chatting to a mate he was saying that he finds the pre frontal pressure drop the key to Sordwana.
I have started a new thread on the forum
When does Sordwana Work

Go add your ten cents worth.
(you will need to log in / or register to access this section of the forum .... it is free tho :-) )

Cheers

Cuta, Snoek bring on the Summer

Well the conditions at home are not great, but the news of some cuta and snoek coming out has brightened things up a little. A mate got a 16kg cuta off the Bluff earlier in the week and another mate reported that the ski boaters had boated some cuta and snoek of Durban yesterday as well.

I was also talking to a guy who has just come back from Sordwana, he got some Dorado,an Iggie and a small Wahoo. Some cuta were also boated and another guy got a 35kg Sailfish.
All we need now is some clean seas and we will be in the thick of things .... I hope.
